AHA FAQs

Do AHAs make the skin more sensitive to the sun?

Because AHAs help to slough off the top dead layer of skin, they can make the skin more sensitive to the sun. However, because everyone's skin is different, there's no way to say how much of a difference the AHA product will make. For that reason, it is important to always use a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher, such as Nu-Derm Healthy Skin Protection SPF 35 by Obagi - not just when using AHAs, but every day.

What is the difference between alpha and beta hydroxy acids?

Alpha hydroxy acids occur naturally and include lactic, which comes from dairy products; glycolic, from sugar; malic, which comes from apples; and citric, from citrus fruits. AHAs weaken the bonds between cells in the outer, dead layer of skin, which aids in exfoliation and speeds up the normal shedding process. Beta hydroxy acids are synthetic acids generated from willow bark and birch and are sometimes called salicylic acids. Despite the fact that beta hydroxy acids are synthetic, they are similar in structure to a naturally occurring acid in the skin, so they generally are non-irritating.

What is the benefit of using products with both AHAs and BHAs?

When AHAs and BHAs are combined, their effectiveness is greatly increased, aloowing each to be used in much lower concentrations. These milder concentrations mean that the products are less irritating to skin. The MD Skincare line of products is known for their combination of AHAs and BHAs.

If I use a product with AHAs, will it fade my tanned skin?
